According to reinsurer Munich RE of Germany, global losses from natural disasters amounted to $330 billion in 2017, the second-highest figure ever recorded. Despite a global consensus that disaster preparedness is of critical importance, the global community has not placed enough emphasis on action over rhetoric, and response rather than preparedness has dominated policy, funding and programmatic attention. As we have seen with the immense impact of recent disasters, such as the 2017 hurricane season, communities are still often unprepared in addressing the disasters that now strike with increasing frequency and intensity.
Americares and Concordia will convene a select group of leaders from the private, public, academic, and nonprofit sectors to collectively identify specific steps that will advance past rhetoric to action through prioritization of programming, policy, and investment. This discussion—and the resulting actions—will contribute to a more formalized framework that will be presented to the Concordia community on the plenary stage of the 2018 Concordia Annual Summit.
Please note that this is an invitation-only event.
